National College Instrumentation Facility (NCIF) – Report of one day
workshop on Analytical Techniques- 27.7.2018
National college Instrumentation facility
(NCIF) and department of chemistry conducted a one day workshop on Analytical Techniques, Post Graduate
Diploma Course in Analytical Techniques(Batch –II ) and Certificate
distribution for Batch –I was held on 27th July, 2018 in the PG and Research
Department of Chemistry, National
College, Tiruchirapalli. The Head
of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. K.Vivekanandan welcomed the gathering. The Principal Dr. R. Sundhararaman delivered
the presidential address. In his Presidential address, the Principal proudly
mentioned that the college has been granted extension of autonomy till 2023 and
that NAAC has recognized our institution as a High Performing Institution. He
also wished everyone the best of luck
The Director of Studies Dr. K. Anbarasu offered felicitations. He mentioned the
names of the instruments available in National College Instrumentation
Facility(NCIF) and that we are going to get XRD and XRF instruments. We are also trying to get a NMR spectrometer.
. The Chief Guest Dr. Vijayamohanan K Pillai,
Director, CSIR- Central Electrochemical Institute, Karaikudi, In his inaugural address, Dr. Vijayamohanan
K Pillai thanked the NCIF coordinator and the college management for having
organized such a workshop and also for
inviting the other guest speakers. In
his inaugural address, he explained the importance of analytical
techniques. He explained the use of the
same in various fields like forensic science and medicine, and in the use of
sensors. Dr.S.Sunitha introduced the chief guest.
During the
certificate distribution Dr.D.Saravanan, NCIF Coordinator reported that 2017-18
batch among 18 students 10 students got jobs in reputed company ITC, Orchid
Pharma, Sai Mirra innopharma, Regional office of Textile Committee, Swiss
Garnier Genexaa Sciences and remaining students gone for research programmes.
The course has a lot of job opportunities.
Dr J. Ramanatham, Project Lead, API
Operations, Global Technology Services-GTS, Pfizer, Chennai delivered a talk on
the topic INTRODUCTION TO DRUG
DISCOVERY. He explained the various
phases of drug development, namely, target selection, lead discovery, medicinal
chemistry, in-vitro studies, in-vivo studies, clinical trials and
therapeutics. He explained the
importance of stereoisomers and current trends. He emphasized about EHS
Environmental Health and Safety while dealing with drugs during manufacture. Dr
L. Pushpalatha introduced the guest speaker
Dr A. Ilangovan delivered a talk on the
topic INTRODUCTION TO MASS SPECTRA AND ITS
APPLICATIONS. He explained in
detail the various stages involved in mass spectral analysis with examples. He also explained about the instrumentation
and also why we need to go in for high-resolution mass spectra. He also made it very interactive though it
was a post-lunch session.

Around 200 PG chemistry students, Research
Scholars and staff from colleges in around
Tiruchirappalli have participated in the workshop. The certificates were
distributed to all the participants of the workshop by the Controller of
Examinations, Dr V. Nandagopalan and the Vice-Principal Dr A.T. Ravichandran.
DrDr M. Murali, Assistant Professor was the Master of Ceremony. The coordinator Dr D. Saravanan proposed a
